Much is made of Baby Boomers and their influence on U.S. society, but there’s also a sizable population born before the end of World War II — the Silent Generation.
Only, they are not so silent and are far from defenseless despite their advancing ages.
A prime example is 85-year-old Wayne Williams of Riverton, Wyoming, who was startled shortly before midnight Friday by someone beating on his door.
The homeowner secured his .380 caliber handgun and opened the front door, only to find an aggressive stranger waiting for him there. Williams later told reporters that he believed opening the door was an error, but he could not ignore the pounding and kicking late at night.
He recalled, “The guy was obviously irrational. He was saying ‘they’ sent him to my house; ‘they’ said he owns my house and I don’t — crazy, crazy stuff.”
Williams believes the intruder, who shoved his way into his home, was drunk or under the influence of drugs. He attempted to fire in self-defense but had not chambered a round.
The unidentified intruder then challenged him to try again to shoot him. Williams got the man back out the door, and both tumbled down the front steps.
The elderly homeowner found himself on top of the alleged attacker and fired a single shot, striking the suspect in the leg. Williams then disengaged and called 911, and he recalled that arriving officers were initially more concerned with the weapon he still held and not the man down in the front yard.
He wisely put the gun down and explained the situation to authorities.
The Riverton Police Department issued a statement Saturday asserting that the violent confrontation appeared to be a case of self-defense. Once again, the presence of a firearm enabled a person who likely would have been a defenseless victim to walk away from a dangerous situation.
