A Georgia man was awakened early Saturday morning in just about the worst way possible. Josh Dobbs was undoubtedly startled to hear the sound of a woman screaming for help outside of his Union City apartment door.
Fortunately for two women who survived a very possibly fatal knife attack, Dobbs responded quickly.
The unspeakable violence took place at Hidden Lake Apartments to the south of Atlanta. By the time Dobbs heard the screams, police say two women had already been attacked by a suspect. One of them had called the Union City Police Department for help, and when the Good Samaritan opened his door, a third woman was also being stabbed.
According to Captain Prentice Brooks of the Union City PD, “Officers responded to that location where they observed a female laying outside in between cars who had also been stabbed, as well as two subjects behind the apartment — the incident locations.”
The two subjects police discovered were another female victim who had been stabbed as well as the suspect.
Brooks related that as the male suspect was assaulting these female suspects with the knife, Dobbs was alerted to the emergency and “stepped up and stopped the threat.”
The captain expressed the gratitude of his department and commended the armed civilian for “stepping up.”
Dobbs told Fox 5 that “I just couldn’t sit there and watch and hear what was going on.” He added that he has a daughter “and I have a lot of respect for females and everything, so I was just doing the right thing and stepping up.”
One of the stabbing victims died of her wounds, and the other two victims are recovering. Police continue to investigate but believe the violent attack started with a domestic dispute.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries. The incident did not warrant much local news coverage, and online mentions are difficult to track down.
However, the intervention of an armed citizen in quite likely saving the lives of the two female stabbing victims should be applauded by all. There was no one else there to defend the victims, and Dobbs put himself in harm’s way by being armed and coming to their rescue.
The easiest thing by far is to do nothing, to sit silently behind a locked door and wait for the inevitable silence that follows every violent event. All manner of excuses may be made for inaction, and there’s no way to know how many people heard the commotion and chose to “mind their own business.”
One man decided differently. Dobbs armed himself and stepped into the fray. He demonstrated what true selfless heroism means in a time when many would simply look the other way.
It is also encouraging to see the thankfulness of the local police for his actions. Police have incredibly difficult jobs, and it is impossible for them to be at the scene of every violent incident to save the day. In this case and countless others, it is up to an armed civilian to rise to the occasion and confront the threat.
Two women have a stranger to thank for saving their lives. They also have the Second Amendment to be thankful for since Dobbs exercised his constitutional right to be prepared to defend himself and others.
The world is an increasingly dangerous place, and for many misguided individuals, the solution is to disarm the population. But make no mistake, that action would only remove weapons from law-abiding citizens like Dobbs.
And for two women in Union City, Georgia, Saturday may well have had a tragic ending.
