North Carolina’s Castle Doctrine is clear — a person has the right to defend themselves in their home, vehicle or workplace. These are considered to be your “castle,” and a violent criminal who threatens you at either one of these is taking their lives into their own hands.
This legal concept raced to front and center when a woman defended herself against an apparent road rager.
Defense attorney Daniel Meier explained that state law “presumes she was afraid for her life because this person was trying to unlawfully enter her ‘castle,’ her car.”
Details are still sketchy, but police say a Raleigh, North Carolina, woman will not face charges after she shot a man in the parking lot of a Food Lion grocery store.
Authorities believe it was a clear case of self-defense.
The incident apparently began while the unidentified woman was driving. Police reported 49-year-old Steven McLamb followed her to the store on Lead Mine Road and attempted to get into her car after she parked.
When he reportedly grabbed the door handle and tried to enter, she shot him in self-defense. McLamb was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries.
Maj. Brian Harrison with the Raleigh Police Department said that no charges are planned to be filed against the woman unless new evidence comes to light.
Defense attorney Lee Turner explained that McLamb’s apparent actions led to the fatal incident. “It’s obvious this individual contributed to what occurred to him that day by his own actions.”
Acting out on road rage is a dangerous game in 2023. Too many people take out their apparent frustrations behind the wheel, but usually it ends with gestures and horn honking. Following a person to a parking lot and attempting to open their car door crosses the line and sets up a potentially fatal situation.
The best thing to do by far is to ignore other drivers and continue to where you are going. This man apparently ignored that wisdom and paid the ultimate price.
