There’s just no substitute for being wholly prepared when an unexpected crisis hits. Sometimes that catastrophic event is natural, and whether it’s having the right insurance or living on high ground, it pays to be ready.
Other times, the unexpected is entirely manmade. There are bad people who do bad things, and all the law enforcement in the world will not stop violent criminals bent on causing chaos.
The one thing they count on is their victims being unprepared.
A frightening situation sprang up for an apartment resident in Melbourne, Florida. It was about 2:00 a.m. on Sunday when a man was surprised by two alleged intruders entering his residence.
West Melbourne police reported that multiple assailants forced their way inside. The intended victim did not cooperate with their plan, and he fired multiple shots in their direction. One of the intruders was pronounced dead at Holmes Regional Medical Center and the other took himself to the hospital for treatment.
Neither were immediately identified.
The homeowner was not injured. Police said the investigation is ongoing and there has not been a determination on possible charges. Investigators are checking to see if there was a prior relationship between the alleged intruders and the resident.
Local media outlets spoke to several residents of the complex who described the shock of police cars racing onto the scene. One neighbor said that they were “against guns” and that “we really need to take a look at it, and we’re not.”
Most other residents of Reserves interpreted the situation differently, noting that the incident highlighted the need to be armed.
As long as there are bad people who prey on the innocent, it is necessary to prepare for that possibility. There’s nothing wrong with security systems, right up until the moment when someone completely disregards it and marches on in.
That is the point where exercising one’s Second Amendment rights is critical. At least one Florida man is thankful he did.
