It seems like common sense that after a divorce or breakup, battling ex-partners should go their separate ways and move on with their lives. Thankfully this is normally the case, but all too often the exact opposite occurs.
And sometimes it leads to deadly results.
According to reports, a woman in Issaquah, Washington, found herself in a frightening situation Friday morning. Investigators believe her ex-boyfriend attempted to break into her apartment just before 10:30 a.m. This was a bad idea.
Local media reported the woman fired a single shot which struck the ex-boyfriend. He died at the scene.
Authorities described the alleged break-in and the shooting that followed as a “domestic violence incident.” Apparently yet another example of an ex-partner who could not leave the past behind, and this time with deadly results.
Police Chief Paula Schwan said the intended victim notified 911 immediately after the shooting and has been “totally cooperative” with investigators.
Neighbor Tina Freatman told reporters that she is “devastated” that such a violent incident could occur near where she lives. “From now on, I will be walking the neighborhood with a gun.”
Without the Second Amendment to protect the right to armed self-defense, the woman who protected herself would almost certainly have faced a much different outcome in Friday’s deadly encounter. While she is undoubtedly shaken by the incident, it is important to note that she chose not to be a victim.
A good question for anti-gun zealots would be exactly what they would prefer the outcome of the alleged attempted break-in to be. Should the woman have been defenseless, just waiting for help to arrive and hoping that she would not become just another statistic.
Or should she have been able to be her own first responder and possibly save her own life?
