It must have been quite a shock in Surprise, Arizona, just after 4:00 a.m. Monday morning when a homeowner discovered two alleged burglary suspects in their home. But thanks to the Second Amendment and a dose of courage, the encounter ended well for the law-abiding citizen.
The homeowner opened fire after encountering the two young men. One of them was struck by a bullet and taken to the hospital by authorities with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.
Police identified the older burglary suspect as 19-year-old Kason Nelson, while the other was a juvenile.
Sunrise Police discovered a link between a tenant renting from the homeowner and the burglary suspects.
The department said in a statement: “During the investigation, detectives learned that the homeowner involved is currently renting to a tenant who knows the suspects. The suspects told investigators, under Miranda Warnings, that they came to visit the tenant. However, Sunrise Police detectives, with assistance from the K-9 unit, located a firearm and other items indicating the suspects were intending to commit a burglary.”
Nelson faces several felony charges related to the alleged attempted burglary. The juvenile is incarcerated in a detention center on suspicion of felony burglary.
Neighbor Nancy McCraven told AZ Family that “it’s almost unthinkable, especially in the early morning hours. You never think it’s going to happen, especially in a nice quiet neighborhood like this, and it’s always quiet.”
However, living in a “nice quiet” area does not eliminate the threat of a random encounter with a violent criminal. It is proven every day that for most, being properly prepared to defend themselves and their families means having a legal firearm and the skills necessary to use it.
As much as they would like to be, the police are almost never nearby when such a showdown occurs. By the time they arrive, what’s done is done.
The Arizona homeowner was likely considered easy prey by the two suspects, but that almost became a deadly mistake. It is gratifying to learn of a good guy with a gun successfully thwarting a criminal act and demonstrating the courage to stand against wrongdoing.
