Colorado lawmakers on Sunday took a giant step closer to the ban of the sale or transfer of popular semi-automatic weapons. The House on a 35-27 vote advanced a bill that died a quick death in the Democratic legislature last year.

A similar proposal in 2023 did not get out of committee. Many legislators expressed concerns over what they rightly perceived as a government overreach that may violate the Constitution.

It is uncertain whether lawmakers this time around will make the state the 11th in the U.S. to enact such a prohibition. Colorado in recent months embarked on duplicating the draconian gun control measures found in California.

But the state is fairly evenly divided politically, though anti-gun forces now hold a slight majority in both legislative bodies and the governor’s mansion. But as the bill advances to the upper chamber, it is worth noting that the Senate is not as extreme as the House.

Also telling are reservations expressed by Gov. Jared Polis (D) over the vagueness and sweeping nature of the ban.

The governor last year signed four gun control measures that, though significant and opposed by gun rights advocates, were not as egregious as the proposed ban on popular sporting rifles.

Colorado raised the minimum age to purchase any weapon to 21 from 18, enacted a three-day waiting period to purchase a firearm, expanded the existing red flag law and stripped some liability protections from the firearms industry.

The state has been the site of several recent tragedies, leading some to misplace blame on weapons instead of perpetrators with no regard for human life. These led certain leaders to want to eradicate weapons with more capacity to inflict damage.

Gun rights proponents, however, argue that the state should focus on what clearly is a mental health crisis as well as prosecuting violent criminals.

It will be a close call for the ban on the sale or transfer of so-called “assault weapons” in Colorado.
