Nothing evokes fear in a would-be criminal quite like a good guy with a gun. These bad guys are constantly on the lookout for law enforcement and will typically avoid engaging in their activities when the police are nearby.
But that changes, especially late at night, when all is quiet and it appears the coast is clear for them to proceed.
That was doubtlessly the thought process of an alleged wannabe jewelry store robber on Saturday night in Omaha, Nebraska. The target was Sidrony Jewelers, and security camera footage caught the dramatic encounter that ensued.
Military veteran and store owner Garrett Peddicord was still in his shop at roughly 11:30 p.m. working through a long list of orders when he encountered the unexpected.
Not completely unexpected, it must be said, as Peddicord makes it a point to be always prepared. “I typically carry a firearm on my waist, even after hours. It’s just one of those things; keys, wallet, firearm.”
The owner was undoubtedly surprised when the front glass to his store shattered and someone jumped through the newly created opening. According to the New York Post, the video footage “shows the burglar — dressed head to toe in black — hurl a rock through the shop’s window and crawl through the broken glass, expecting to be alone among the gems.”
But the alleged would-be thief was far from alone. Peddicord quickly confronted him with his gun and yelled, “Hey [expletive]!”
The surveillance camera clearly captured the attempted thief holding an object over a glass case filled with jewelry. He froze when confronted by the armed owner and never struck the fixture.
As quickly as the intruder came through the broken window, he exited even quicker.
Peddicord spent three years on a deployment in Afghanistan. Of all the tools at his disposal in his jewelry store, he said the handgun was the one “that I hope to never have to use.”
He credited “repetitive training and practice” for his quick response that saved his valuable inventory and possibly more.
