The Canadian military intends to destroy thousands of Browning Hi-Power pistols that were standard issue in the armed forces since World War II.

The pistols are now illegal under the nation’s gun control laws. Handguns with a barrel shorter than 4 ⅛ inches are banned, and the venerable Browning weapons which have been in production since 1935 typically have magazines that hold 13 rounds.

The Firearms Act of 1995 permits only 10.

The Canadian Forces has nearly 12,000 of these pistols in stock, and roughly 1,300 are non-functioning. There will be a small number kept in museums and on display, but most are subject to destruction.

When the plan was still being formulated two years ago, National Defense spokesman Dan Le Bouthillier told the media that the pistols ran afoul of federal law. “Given the age and wear of the pistol fleet as well as the fact that the Browning is a restricted firearm and the magazine is a prohibited device, disposal will be through destruction by smelting.”

Officials intend to destroy the weapons by the end of the year. The military struggled for years to procure replacement parts for the aging firearms.

Replacing the pistols will be the Sig Sauer P320 handgun in what is reportedly an expenditure of more than $8 million.

There were more than a million of the Browning weapons produced during the Second World War, with many coming in a production run late in the conflict. There are new versions of the pistol in circulation as well.

Canada is in the midst of a gun control push by the current government that led to many new restrictions. A temporary ban was put in place on gun imports, and there are calls for a national freeze on the handgun transactions and ownership.

The sunsetting of the Browning follows a similar move with the traditional Lee Enfield used by Canadian Rangers in the north of the country for decades.
