Examples of good guys with guns protecting themselves and their loved ones from violent criminals continue to pour in. The bad guys apparently are slow at learning hard lessons delivered by law-abiding citizens who refuse to be the next victim.

A homeowner in Castle Point, Missouri, was one of two people startled in the early morning hours of Tuesday by an attempted break-in. There is not a long list of options at 4:30 a.m. for a person who is unarmed and facing an intruder.

Thankfully, this homeowner was intelligent enough to be armed and prepared.

The suspect was struck by a single bullet and fled the scene. He was not missing for long as a police K9 tracked him down in a nearby wooded area for officers to take him into custody.

Local media reported he was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital suffering from “life-threatening injuries.” The suspect was only identified by authorities as a man in his 20s, and no motive for the attempted break-in was established.

There were no injuries to the residents reported.

A stunned neighbor, Napoleon Lattimore, weighed in on the early morning shooting. “I hate he got shot but he was wrong. I probably would do the same thing. All he was doing was trying to protect his home.”

Lattimore told reporters that he’d lived in the area for years, and the neighborhood suffered from people coming in and breaking into homes.

The St. Louis County Police Department noted the investigation into the violent encounter continues.

The Second Amendment is in force for situations exactly like this Missouri case. A person most likely asleep in the early morning hours must be able to properly defend themselves from a violent home invasion, and that appears to be exactly what this homeowner did.

Even in St. Louis, it appears unlikely the person who rose to the occasion will face charges. Though not a city friendly to gun rights, the incident should be deemed an open-and-shut case of self-defense.

They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting there is one.
