Despite the best efforts of gun rights opponents, the Second Amendment is alive and well. This is regularly proven as law-abiding citizens choose to stand their ground and defend themselves from the criminal element.

The latest instance was reported on the Gulf Coast.

Homeowners in Gulfport, Mississippi, do not face charges after defending their residence against three alleged robbers on Monday. Two of the suspects died in the failed attempt and a third is in custody.

That young man under Mississippi law faces a pair of murder charges because his two alleged accomplices were killed.

Police believe the homeowners were targeted by the robbery attempt, and according to Gulfport Lt. Jason DuCre, “they acted in self-defense.”

The young men who succumbed to their gunshot wounds were identified as Temi Lawal, 18, of Moss Point, and Lorenzo Stennis, 21, of Pascagoula. Arrested for their deaths was Lawrence Corley IV, 17, of Gautier. He is charged with capital murder.

Corley is being held in the Harrison County Adult Detention Center on a $2 million bond.

Gulfport officers were called to the residence Monday night on a report of shots fired. Lawal was discovered on the ground outside of the residence already dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Stennis was found at a local hospital, where he had been taken after being struck by multiple bullets. He died a short time later.

Police reported that Stennis was arrested in January and charged with firing shots that hit several vehicles during a party. DuCre also said that at least one of the alleged robbers knew the homeowners.

Investigators determined that the three suspects planned the robbery together. Each lived approximately 45 minutes away from the target, and the specific reason they chose this particular home has not been revealed by investigators.

They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting there is one.
