Memorial Day is set aside for remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. Millions of Americans gather with family and friends to commemorate the holiday, and it is normally a time of celebration and reflection.

For one Illinois family, the day almost became tragic

A father of five daughters was awakened just before 5:00 a.m. to unusual sounds on his quiet street in Winnetka. When the unidentified homeowner went to investigate, he discovered three people allegedly attempting to steal his luxury car.

To be clear, there is a profound choice to be made at this point. The man chose to confront the suspects, shouting to them that he was armed and able to defend life and property.

This led to one of the three firing shots at the homeowner, forcing him to rush behind a tree for protection. The man returned fire, and gunfire rang out in the early morning hours as his daughters slept inside.

Investigators later found dozens of shell casing scattered on the ground and street outside the normally tranquil home.

Local police responded quickly, but the fleeing suspects were not immediately apprehended. The homeowner was uninjured, and no one apparently was struck by the hail of bullets.

Two of the men hurriedly left in a getaway car while the third ran away.

A neighbor told reporters that he was shocked by the loud outburst that came before sunrise on a holiday Monday. “I was surprised that somebody would fire a gun, and it does make me a little bit concerned.”

The man added that if he were in his neighbor’s shoes, he would likely let the thieves get away with the vehicle and just report it to police and his insurance company.

And while these situations unfold quickly, it is prudent to decide whether such a confrontation is necessary. It is also important to note that the homeowner was surprised at 5:00 a.m. by the intrusion and undoubtedly felt that he and his family were threatened.

The alleged intruders also reportedly fired the first shot. Fortunately for the Illinois family, all were safe to enjoy their holiday.
