A Florida woman whose family was cornered in a bedroom by an alleged home intruder responded in the manner in which an American protected by the Second Amendment should. She exercised her constitutional rights and fired her weapon, striking the man and ending the threat.

This came after law enforcement was called to the Kissimmee home.

According to the Miami Herald, someone in the home notified the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) that there was a burglary taking place. Responding officers attempted to get the suspect, 28-year-old David Martinez-Estrada, to leave the home but he refused.

Meanwhile, the family was hiding in a bedroom. And instead of surrendering to authorities, Martinez-Estrada continued to move through the house until he came to the bedroom where his intended victims were holed up.

When he entered the bedroom, the woman fired multiple shots. This had the desired effect, and the Sheriff’s Department reported that Martinez-Estrada hastily left.

OSCO officials said later that officers spoke with the victim. She explained that she had no choice but to use her firearm to defend herself and her family from the alleged intruder.

She said she only fired when the suspect forced his way into the bedroom where her family fled for safety.

Martinez-Estrada was transported to a local hospital for treatment of at least one gunshot wound, and there is currently no word on his condition. The OSCO reported that he was charged with criminal mischief, burglary of an occupied dwelling unarmed, stalking and resisting an officer without violence.”

Without the firearm readily available, the outcome of the frightening encounter may have been far worse for the Florida family. They did everything they could to avoid a violent confrontation, but that choice was taken away by the alleged criminal.

Yet again, it is fortunate that there was a gun in the home and someone with both the skill and courage to defend their loved ones. This is a fundamental right that should be fought for.
