Illinois’ all-out war on gun rights led to next week’s shuttering of a landmark gun shop — 12 years to the day after it opened its doors. The owners of Bordertown Guns in Momence, Doug and Staci Duncan, simply cannot survive in the current climate.

The couple announced on Facebook that they will lock the doors for good on June 12.

“With much consideration and regret, we are no longer able to weather the political storm in Illinois. With the current administration in power, they have made it impossible for our business plan to work. We have made the painful decision to close our doors. The Illinois PICA ruling, a recession, and restrictions with social media, we have hit a wall to try and stay in business.”

Bordertown Guns will not be the last victim of the so-called Protect Illinois Communities Act. State lawmakers made it illegal to sell the most popular long guns on the market as well as standard-capacity ammunition magazines.

Further insult came from the Firearm Dealer License Certification Act.

This added yet another layer of bureaucracy at the state level to an industry that already must be licensed by the federal government. Shops are also now required to install prohibitively expensive security systems in what is a blatant attempt to inflict financial damage on the businesses.

The Duncans explained that they pursued several avenues to remain viable. But at every turn they were told that the state government simply does not want gun dealers to continue operations.

Again, Bordertown Guns is not the first and will certainly not be the last Illinois firearms shop to close its doors. The power of the state, even against a constitutionally protected business, is enormous.

Illinois politics is dominated by Chicago, and elected officials simply do not have the stomach to get control of the city’s violent crime dilemma. So, they enact law after draconian law to be able to proclaim that they did “something,” even when it is only to suppress the rights of law-abiding citizens.

They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting there is one.
