Chicago residents are all too familiar with the criminal escapades of those who have no respect for the law. Many likely are numb to the daily and weekly grind of hearing of yet another killing, robbery or break-in.
But some in the Second City have clearly decided that their role is not that of a victim. In at least three instances over the weekend, law-abiding citizens defended themselves with firearms against becoming just another grim statistic.
One man shot three others who were severely beating him on the street. Another man fired his legally carried weapon to chase off a pair of would-be carjackers.
And on Sunday morning, an attempted burglary in the Chatham neighborhood was halted dead in its tracks by a third defensive use of a firearm.
The Chicago Police Department reported that a 50-year-old man was caught by a homeowner as he attempted to illegally enter the residence. The alleged perpetrator was shot in the back and was transported to University of Chicago Hospital.
At last report he was listed in critical condition.
There is no word on possible charges in the latest case, and the circumstances certainly point toward justifiable self-defense. A complication may arise with the alleged intruder being shot in the back, though this could easily be explained by either his movement or the reaction of the intended victim — or both.
The political beliefs of the prosecutor on Second Amendment protections may also come into play. Illinois laws concerning the right self-defense must be weighed against the facts of the case.
But one thing is clear. Residents of the Windy City are fed up with being defenseless against the scourge of violent crime. At least three different weekend instances showed armed citizens becoming their own first responders and fighting back against those who would victimize them.
