The U.S. Concealed Carry Association (USCAA) is a rapidly expanding gun rights group closing in on an impressive 900,000 members. As its name makes clear, its mission is to offer legal protection benefits to those who exercise their concealed carry rights and are ensnared by oppressive laws in states that do not respect the Second Amendment.
The organization recently strengthened liability coverage for gun owners to guard them from government overreaches.
This includes increasing the bail bond coverage provided to USCCA members from $100,000 to $250,000. As a $1 million bond typically costs 10%, or $100,000, and some officials are set on increasing the burden, this increase affords much greater protection for gun owners.
The policy also addresses controversial Extreme Risk Protection Orders, or “red flag” laws. A new benefit provides up to $15,000 in attorney fees and expenses for those facing this challenge.
These laws are expanding in certain states, and while the intentions of some of the proponents are understandable, they afford precious few, if any, due process guarantees for the accused.
And then there’s the rarely considered issue of expunging or sealing records after a law-abiding citizen faces this action. While there is an immediate sense of relief when such an incident is over, it is sometimes a shock to realize that records remain for years.
Truly putting such an encounter behind a person means not having a record following them for many years. That’s why USCCA coverage provides up to $5,000 in attorney fees to gain control of this information.
USCCA Chairman and co-founder Tim Schmidt explained to Fox News Digital that his organization “represents hundreds of thousands of law-abiding gun owners across the country, and we have increasingly heard concerns from them about the threat of baseless ERPOs.”
It is a sad state of affairs when upstanding citizens need liability insurance to protect their Second Amendment rights from government infringements, but that’s the point we have reached.
