One man is dead, and his girlfriend was seriously injured after an alleged attack at a convenience store in Pontiac, Michigan. The intended victim was armed, and what was reported to be an assault from behind was stopped by his quick actions.

The attack apparently targeted the 23-year-old woman’s 21-year-old ex-boyfriend.

According to a witness, 23-year-old Darien Louis Bragg of Pontiac and his girlfriend observed her ex-boyfriend at the counter of a convenience store in the process of making a purchase. The witness said the pair then attacked the younger man from behind, causing him to fall to the floor.

The two assailants allegedly piled on top of him and struck him multiple times. The victim, however, was armed.

Investigators believe he fired one shot, striking Bragg in the chest and killing him. The bullet traveled completely through his body and hit the female in the abdomen.

She was reportedly seriously injured and is being treated at an area hospital.

According to accounts from the scene, the 21-year-old then attempted to pay for his items and waited for the police to arrive. Officials with the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office are reviewing the details of the investigation to determine if charges will be filed, though by all reports, it appears to have been a clear-cut example of justified self-defense.

It is impossible to justify a brazen attack on an unsuspecting victim from behind, as this alleged incident appears to be. While the loss of life is regrettable, the right to self-defense is well-established in U.S. law, and most prosecutors recognize the freedom to protect oneself from a violent attack.

Second Amendment supporters cherish and protect this liberty from efforts to dilute or eradicate it. Without the right to self-defense, all others may quickly vanish.
