The internet age spawned a new way of doing business, and countless transactions are carried out online every day. Some involve meeting personally to exchange items and payment, leading to yet another danger for the law-abiding public to prepare for.

Last week, authorities with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in Florida were called to a location concerning a violent encounter that ended with a shooting.

Investigators determined that a seller placed an advertisement for a $5,500 gold bracelet on Facebook Marketplace and set up a meeting with 18-year-old Jaylon Shaw. This dangerous situation should have set off alarm bells when the seller and his wife were provided with an address to deliver the jewelry.

When they arrived, Shaw allegedly snatched the bracelet from the seller. Fearing for his life, the citizen produced a handgun and fired multiple shots.

A 911 call was received a short time later from a location where Shaw reportedly appeared with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He was taken to Gulf Coast Medical Center and was found to have a broken scapula.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Investigators recovered four .380 caliber casings where the shooting took place and noted bullet marks on a garbage can and other surroundings. No one else was injured.

Detectives interviewed Shaw at the hospital. After immediately denying any involvement, the young man reportedly confessed that he planned the robbery with a second unnamed person.

He was subsequently arrested and charged with robbery by sudden snatching.

Great caution should be taken when consummating an online transaction in person, and many jurisdictions offer safe places for buyers and sellers to meet in public. This option should be strongly considered when dealing with a total stranger, and these transactions should only be completed with situational awareness.
