The regularity of attacks against innocent people in the U.S. is alarming, and the public response is now even more predictable. The good people are arming themselves and exercising their Second Amendment rights to ensure they do not become the next victims.
Two masked alleged assailants were shot by their intended victim in Birmingham Friday, and one was killed. The other was thought to have died but was miraculously revived at UAB hospital after the terrifying incident.
The intended victim was also shot, though his wounds were not described as life-threatening.
According to law enforcement, the suspects wore ski masks in 90-degree heat in the South.
Though details were not readily available, police believe the two masked men attempted to rob an individual in the parking lot of Oak Tree Apartments. The alleged attack unfolded at approximately 11 a.m.
The target was armed and fired multiple shots at the suspects. Police reported at least 13 shots were fired between the intended victim and the attackers.
The deceased man was identified as 34-year-old Rufus Jermaine Brock of Birmingham. The second man was revived after initial reports indicated he was also dead.
Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald issued a strong warning to those who would prey on innocent victims in his state.
“This comes from a place of love: Young men, we live in Alabama where everybody has a gun. Before you think you can get the drop on somebody, remember that other person you think may be a victim, it doesn’t always turn out that way.”
Fitzgerald further noted that this latest incident is believed to be the seventh justifiable homicide in Birmingham so far this year. Indeed, more people are arming themselves and choosing to be their own first responders.
It is regrettable that the situation has come to this, but citizens are left with little choice.
