A Georgia prison inmate was on the lam for three days last week after walking away from a work detail. The story has a happy ending as a good guy with a gun intervened and held the escapee for the authorities.

Officials report that 39-year-old Bruce Douglas Partin Jr. was laboring in Towns County Monday afternoon when he suddenly vanished. He was at the county waste facility when he apparently decided to make a break for it.

One significant problem for Partin was that when he walked away, he wore the distinctive orange uniform, a standard issue for prisoners. Three days later, he was still in the orange pants.

A massive manhunt ensued, but the escaped prisoner was nowhere to be found. This despite the deployment of drones and K-9s in the attempt to locate him.

It was Thursday afternoon when a good citizen called emergency services to report they had spotted Partin. That alerted authorities to his general location, and a few hours later, they had their man.

That was thanks to another civilian, Steven Kirby, who was tipped off to Partin’s presence outside his home by his Labradoodle, Odie. Kirby took the dog’s barking as a warning and retrieved a firearm.

When he walked outside to investigate, he found Partin still decked out in orange. Kirby ordered him to the ground facedown and held him at gunpoint while his wife dialed 911.

Towns County deputies raced to the scene and apprehended Partin. The homeowner told officials that he was prepared to do whatever was necessary to defend his family and property.

The sheriff’s office was thankful for the citizen’s intervention. Authorities posted their gratitude on social media, noting, “There’s a new lawman looking over things up on Fodder Creek, Steven Kirby and his faithful K-9 Labradoodle Odie.”

At the time of his escape, Partin was about to make a court appearance on charges of purchase, possession, manufacture, distribution or sale of marijuana, theft by taking, probation violation and burglary. He faces the additional charge of felony escape.

Now, he is back in the Towns County Detention Center.
