Louisiana finally pushed through its constitutional carry law, freeing citizens to enjoy their Second Amendment rights without asking the state government for a permission slip.

Gov. Jeff Landry (R) signed SB 1 back in March, and it took effect on Independence Day. Still, New Orleans officials are doing everything in their power to circumvent state law — to the point of trickery and deception.

In the aftermath of their failed attempts to coerce the state to declare significant parts of the city as “sensitive places,” leaders resorted to a solution that would almost be struck down in court.

The Eighth District police station in the French Quarter was magically transformed into a vocational technical school. This dubious designation means, at least for now, that a major swath of the tourist district is now a “gun-free” zone as it is within 1,000 yards of a “school.”

Being found in violation of a school zone gun prohibition in Louisiana is punishable by up to five years in prison.

Exactly how do city officials believe they will get by with this obvious sleight of hand?

Leaders are moving the site for police officers’ annual training to the station, thereby attempting to justify the designation of a vocational school.

State officials are not buying it.

Attorney General Liz Murrill (R) dismissed the obvious trickery as a ploy that will never stand up in court. She explained, “You cannot just designate yourself as a vo-tech school. Among other implications, if it was one (it’s not), the police department would be under the jurisdiction of a board of supervisors for higher education, and it would be subject to their oversight requirements.”

Murrill cautioned New Orleans law enforcement authorities that arresting anyone under such pretenses would subject the department to a lawsuit under the Civil Rights Act.

NOPD is already under a federal consent decree for past alleged civil rights violations.
