In a perfect world, couples upon the end of a relationship would simply go their separate ways and move on with their lives. Sadly, this often is not the case, and news reports frequently recount tragic outcomes spurred by violent encounters between now-estranged partners.

This was apparently the situation in a Monday evening confrontation at an Oklahoma gas station.

Police believe a man approached his estranged wife at the Tulsa business around 7:00 p.m. as she was with a group of friends. According to witnesses, the man produced a firearm and greatly escalated the already tense setting.

One of the woman’s friends was also armed, and he drew his weapon and demanded that the estranged husband move on.

Instead, the husband allegedly pointed his handgun at the friend, who then fired two shots. The man who allegedly initiated the confrontation was struck by both and rushed to a nearby hospital by emergency personnel.

He is expected to recover fully.

Investigating officers determined the woman already had a protective order against her estranged husband, indicating this was likely not the first incident where he threatened her. This also increased the likelihood that prosecutors will deem the friend’s apparent defensive actions as justified.

At last report, no charges have been filed against the shooter, and the incident may well be determined to be self-defense.

Again, it is a sad reality that ex-partners often do not get on with their lives when relationships end. This may become tragic when an ex turns violent.

A protective order is good, but it mainly serves as a recourse if the estranged partner violates its provisions. It does not offer the protection needed when the jilted ex crosses the line.

That’s where the Second Amendment comes in, and it is fortunate for the woman that she was with an armed friend Monday evening.
