Attempting to enter another person’s home without permission is a dangerous business, certainly in the middle of the night and not knowing how prepared that individual is to defend themselves.

Especially in Texas.

Reports out of San Antonio indicate an alleged intruder was shot and killed early Sunday morning after he attempted to enter a residence and lunged at a homeowner who was prepared to defend himself.

It was just before 1:00 a.m. when the stranger showed up at the front door. The homeowner told the person to leave, only to have the individual try to enter the home again.

And again, the resident told him to move on.

This apparently did not deter the man, and soon, the homeowner heard noises behind his home. When he and his wife went to investigate, they found that the same person was there.

The homeowner was now armed with a shotgun, and he reported that the stranger then lunged at him. The defender fired once, and the alleged attacker was fatally wounded.

Police did not identify the deceased man except as a 47-year-old male. He died despite the efforts of first responders to resuscitate him at the scene.

Neither the man nor his wife were injured, and police would only say that the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed.

The stranger’s actions, as reported, were definitely threatening, and Texas law provides much latitude for defending yourself and your property from a clear threat. Without further information that contradicts initial reports, it is doubtful that charges will be forthcoming.

The loss of life is regrettable, but it is always a dangerous proposition to try to enter a stranger’s home in the middle of the night. It becomes doubly risky when an attack on their person is allegedly attempted.
