Most anti-gunners attempt to cloak their true feelings with such tropes as they “support the Second Amendment” and “respect the nation’s traditions of hunting and target shooting.” The reality is usually quite different, and one lawmaker recently uttered the quiet part out loud.
U.S. Rep Bonnie Coleman (D-NJ) went on record calling for a national gun registry, which is always a precursor to outright confiscation of weapons by oppressive governments.
Coleman declared, “I think it is a wonderful idea that we have a registry of every gun that is owned by a civilian in the United States because then we could have, perhaps, less killings in our neighborhoods, less killings in our supermarkets, less killings at our concerts, less killings period in the United States of America.”
No one seeks to eliminate violent crime and the preying on the weak more than gun rights advocates, and unlike Coleman, they are honest in their proclamations.
But for the lawmaker and others of her ilk, establishing a federal registry of all firearms is a giant step toward mass confiscation.
A few individuals would undoubtedly be allowed to keep a weapon under lock and key or at a central location, much as is done in the U.K. for a select few.
But the overwhelming majority of law-abiding citizens Coleman dismisses as civilians would not be afforded their constitutional rights to defend themselves from those who would do them harm.
At least she is being true to her beliefs since she stridently called for outright bans on so-called “assault weapons” and “high-capacity” magazines. There is a laundry list of further restrictions on the clearly and historically established liberties granted to all upright citizens by the Bill of Rights.
Gun registration and actions that will obviously follow are touted as a cure-all for society’s ills. But, the National Rifle Association issued an authoritative breakdown of claims by gun rights opponents and demonstrated how each is a fallacy.
For example, Coleman and others assert such a registry will prevent violent crime. However, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, most individuals imprisoned for gun crimes acquired their weapons via theft, acquaintances or on the black market.
In other words, there is zero chance these weapons will be registered.
The ATF’s own numbers show that fully half of firearms illegally trafficked originate with straw purchases, which are already illegal.
The NRA further noted that federal law and statutes in multiple states prohibit such a gun registry. In 1986, then-President Ronald Reagan signed the Firearm Owners’ Protection Act into law, banning precisely what the New Jersey congresswoman called for.
Coleman also joined the chorus of outrage from anti-gunners over the Supreme Court’s recent Chevron decision prohibiting unelected bureaucrats from becoming de facto lawmakers. She claimed stripping this power would somehow be detrimental to ordinary Americans.
“It makes it harder for the nonpartisan policy experts and career civil servants who regulate industries from food service, to pharmaceuticals, to airlines and automobiles to do their jobs and keep us all safe.”
What she did not say is that it will prevent rogue actors with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) from unilaterally establishing regulations that are clearly outside of its authority.
The gun control lobby knows that a total ban on firearms cannot be achieved without a national registry. This is not delusional “slippery slope” thinking but the stated aims of those who would erase the Second Amendment.
It is vital that all who treasure gun rights be aware of those seeking to sweep them aside and support organizations that fight to preserve their freedoms.
