There is something particularly disturbing about a home invasion, perhaps more than ordinary street crime. To have one or more strangers force their way into your home, usually at gunpoint, violates the very sanctity of what people believe is their personal safe place.
A home invasion threatens those we love the most and catches us when we should feel secure.
That’s why it is critically important to be prepared.
This preparedness likely saved a Mississippi homeowner who encountered the unexpected Monday night at his home in Tupelo. The resident told police that he was startled by a loud racket at about 11:00 p.m. and discovered that he was the target of a home invasion.
The intended victim retrieved a firearm and encountered a masked person inside the house. He fired.
That was when three people ran out of the rear of the home to get away from his gunshot.
The homeowner described the masked suspect as appearing to have a gun and dressed in all black. The second alleged home invader was similarly attired, and the third wore black pants and a grey shirt.
A neighborhood witness told authorities they saw an older model silver Toyota 4-Runner make a hasty retreat eastbound.
No suspects have been detained at last report, and the investigation continues. There apparently were no injuries to the alleged home invaders or their intended victim.
What is clear is that by all accounts, three unknown individuals drove into the neighborhood with the intent of robbing a residence during the night. Without a firearm nearby, the resident would have been stuck with no choice but to wait for law enforcement to arrive — IF he had a chance to contact them while the suspects were in his residence.
The loaded weapon and firing a shot may well have saved his life. These are the stories that need to be plastered across the mainstream media.
