Sweeping and oppressive gun control measures included in the proposed Pennsylvania state budget are no more, thanks to lawmakers who stood up for the Second Amendment in the face of yet more attacks.

These controversial plans were part of Gov. Josh Shapiro’s (D) budget proposal and included multiple schemes that should concern anyone who values personal freedom.

Lawmakers were able to strip funding away from Shapiro’s attempt to have the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) monitor the social media accounts of lawful gun owners. The state agency will also receive no taxpayer dollars to target upstanding firearm retailers.

Then there’s the state version of the White House’s Office of Gun Violence Prevention. This thinly veiled attempt to infringe on the right to keep and bear arms was brushed aside by worried lawmakers.

The successful thwarting of the governor’s schemes was celebrated by Gun Owners of America (GOA). The organization issued an alert notifying its members and supporters, reporting that all three proposals were “successfully axed from Pennsylvania’s 2024-25 budget.”

The group added, “GOA would especially like to thank Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman (R) for his efforts in successfully negotiating these items out of the budget.”

Before the successful push to shoot down Shapiro’s package, the National Association for Gun Rights’ state-level office, Pennsylvania Gun Rights, spoke out against the plan.

Executive Director Craig Storrs Jr. explained, “If Gov. Shapiro and Speaker McClinton have their way, a $1.5 million taxpayer slush fund could be used to harass law-abiding firearm retailers and to spy on the social media accounts of countless pro-gun Pennsylvanians across the state.”

The funds, which are now slashed, would have enabled the PSP and the Pennsylvania Criminal Intelligence Center to deploy auditors to harass gun retailers and enhance the state’s social media monitoring of people exercising their Second Amendment rights.
