July is a traditional kickoff for many state laws across the nation, and one of them is of major significance to those who cherish the right to keep and bear arms. Unsurprisingly, it is in California.

An effort by anti-gun forces along with their powerful Wall Street allies to record every gun and ammunition transaction made with a credit card was stymied in 2023. Lawmakers and state governments which value the Second Amendment rose as one against yet another overreach into gun rights and forced a “pause” on the program.

Financial firms were all set to create a specific Merchant Category Code (MCC) that would spotlight sales of perfectly legal products.

That was until resistance became so powerful that implementing such a program would create an unworkable patchwork quilt of laws that changed from state to state.

But the Golden State persisted in going its own way in opposition to personal freedoms, and legislators passed a law forcing these financial companies into action.

California’s mandate that credit card companies track and record all firearm and ammunition purchases using their financial services is in effect. This led to possible blowback from some customers and retailers, who took a novel approach to being in the crosshairs of anti-gun officials.

It is only natural that many turn to cash sales instead of completing their purchases using Wall Street giants that seek to track their transactions. In fact, one noted gun retailer in faraway Illinois has already installed an ATM in their shop for just that reason.

Dan Eldridge owns Maxon’s Shooter’s Supplies in the Chicago suburbs. He told the AP that he recently had the machine installed to protect the privacy of his customers, even though Illinois has yet to mandate such monitoring of gun and ammunition transactions.

Eldridge explained, “Viewed most benignly, this code is an effort to stigmatize gun owners. But a more worrisome concern is that this is another private sector end run around the prohibition against the federal government creating a gun registry.”

They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting there is one.
