Violent criminals should note that it is always a bad idea to attack an armed security guard when all you have is a hammer. Unless a crippling blow is immediately delivered in your assault, chances are high that the incident will not end well for the attacker.

Police in Colorado Springs arrested a man on Sunday after he allegedly used a hammer to break into several businesses early Sunday morning and then turned the tool onto the wrong person.

The mayhem first attracted the attention of two armed security guards, who confronted the male suspect. Unfortunately, the alleged attacker was able to strike one of the guards first with the hammer, causing injuries that resulted in the good guy being transported to the hospital.

The second guard did not allow himself to become another victim.

Instead, seeing what happened to his colleague, he drew his weapon and demanded that the suspect stop.

When that clear warning went unheeded, he fired and struck the alleged assailant. That put an end to the random violence.

The injured guard is expected to fully recover, and the second was not hurt in the alarming incident. The suspect was later identified as Travis Crane, and he was arrested and taken to the El Paso County Jail.

His wound was described as non-life-threatening.

There is no word on whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the seemingly random spree or if there was a mental health crisis, but Crane obviously faces numerous charges. It is fortunate that the first guard was not more seriously injured, as a hammer is absolutely a deadly weapon.

The injured security worker learned a valuable lesson the hard way when he was attacked during the confrontation. It is unclear whether he was also armed, but it is fortunate that his cohort had a weapon and was prepared to use it to prevent any further injuries.
