Even in the unlikeliest places, there are anti-gunners who seek nothing less than to burden law-abiding citizens with taxes and penalties for exercising their rights. Nebraska is now a prime example.

State Sen. Justin Wayne (D) recently introduced Legislative Bill 65, which would impose a 5% excise tax on all ammunition sales in the state. The proposal would funnel money from ammo sales to the state Department of Revenue and other agencies.

Why are gun owners being targeted in this tax scheme?

The measure did not say, but it is safe to presume that Wayne and his supporters want to impose a “sin tax” on ammo. This would equate these constitutionally protected products to such practices as smoking, drinking alcohol and gambling.

It’s anybody’s guess what the correlation between them is, and the move is certain to draw strong opposition from Second Amendment supporters.

Interestingly, it followed by just days after the proposed federal legislation to ban states from imposing these taxes on guns and ammo. The Freedom From Unfair Gun Taxes Act would erect a roadblock in front of legislative attempts to enact punitive taxes that could put the cost of self-defense out of reach.

Rep. Dan Issa (R-CA), a co-sponsor of the act, reiterated the charge that state lawmakers attempt to draw parallels between “a core constitutional freedom” and “gambling or drug use.”

And the National Rifle Association (NRA) made a strong stand against this controversial move. The gun rights group blasted the proposal as nothing more than “a property tax cash grab, saddled on the backs of gun owners.”

The NRA has been at the forefront of challenging controversial state attempts to burden gun owners. The organization is leading a lawsuit against California’s recently implemented excise tax, and there will undoubtedly be challenges to Nebraska’s action if it becomes law.
