There is little more insidious than domestic violence. Those who should be protectors become attackers, and too many lives are shattered by these horrific actions.

Last weekend, a Michigan woman found herself in the terrifying situation of being victimized by a protracted domestic violence incident, and it was a good guy with a gun who rescued her.

According to the Albion Department of Public Safety (ADPS), the victim suffered hours of physical abuse on Sunday as she was allegedly held against her will by a male suspect. The two had been dating.

Her ordeal may have gone on even longer, but a neighbor saw the suspect attacking her outside of his residence. He later told officers that he witnessed the alleged assailant dragging the victim and quickly decided to act.

His action involved drawing a firearm and confronting the suspected abuser. When the ex-boyfriend found himself staring down the barrel of a firearm, he ended the attack and ran away.

The good guy with a gun promptly called emergency services to assist his neighbor. Responding officers tragically discovered two children, 9 and 11, hiding from the violent attack in the basement.

Thankfully, the minors were uninjured.

Meanwhile, law enforcement canvassed the area, but it was not until after receiving a tip the following day that the suspect was apprehended. Police accused him of tying up and beating his former girlfriend, and she reportedly suffered cuts and bruises on her face and body.

Authorities added that she may have suffered broken bones in the attack that they discovered began the night before.

There is no way to know how the violent incident would have ended, either for the victim or the children, if the neighbor had not been armed and willing to intervene. He is a hero who should be celebrated for exercising his rights and coming to the aid of a woman in great distress.

And, yet again, it is the decisive action of an armed citizen which saved the day.
