The American appetite for firearms shows no signs of abating. In fact, it is barreling ahead at a record pace with no end in sight.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) released numbers showing that July marked the 60th consecutive month during which more than 1 million instant background checks were conducted for firearms retail purchases.
The FBI National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NCIS) is deployed by federal law whenever there is a potential sale of a weapon.
The industry trade association noted that the last time the national figure dipped below 1 million was July 2019, a full five years ago.
Last month’s adjusted figure reached 1,060,790, representing a 4% jump from July of 2023.
Clearly, there is a passion among law-abiding Americans to exercise their Second Amendment rights in various ways. Whether passing down the time-honored tradition of sport shooting to the next generation or ensuring their fundamental right to defend themselves, the people are speaking.
And they say they do not want their constitutional rights tampered with.
NSSF President and CEO Joe Bartozzi celebrated the latest number: “This mile marker shows the enduring appeal by Americans from all walks of life to exercise their uniquely American right to keep and bear arms. The million-plus monthly background checks over the past five years represent the free expression of Second Amendment rights during tough and troubling times.”
Bartozzi noted that these lofty sales figures endured during the COVID-19 lockdowns that saw certain states closing gun stores and the current “zero tolerance” policy toward firearms dealers who make simple human errors.
The peak month during the streak was March 2020, the onset of the coronavirus pandemic and just before the sweeping social unrest that followed. A staggering 2.3 million background checks were carried out, part of the year’s total of over 21 million.
It should be noted that these figures represent less than the actual total nationwide. That is due to 24 states offering a qualified alternative permit.
Under the Brady Act, a permit holder who has already undergone the required check does not have to repeat the process to obtain a permit to purchase another weapon. These transactions are not accounted for, and the NSSF does not adjust its permit figures.
Then there’s the process by which some states run background checks on concealed carry permit holders and those applying for a permit for the first time. Neither instance results in a firearm transaction, and the NSSF combs through FBI data to eliminate these checks and report only those that result in actual sales.
These figures demonstrate the stark divide in the U.S.
Legions of well-funded anti-gunners make it their daily practice to disparage the Second Amendment and the tens of millions who exercise the rights it guarantees. They are in the highest reaches of government and the wealthiest offices on Wall Street, and they aggressively spread skewed information to make it appear that law-abiding gun owners are a scourge on American society.
But nothing could be further from the truth.
The reality is that there is a significant criminal class in the U.S. that would ceaselessly prey on the innocent if this fundamental right to self-defense were taken away. Many of those who want to strip this freedom from citizens are themselves protected by good guys with guns, but they would not afford this same opportunity to the less fortunate.
Instead, they milk tragedies carried out by remorseless criminals for their own ends. And make no mistake, they will not stop until guns are confiscated door-to-door and the only Americans left who can keep and bear arms are the evildoers.
They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting there is one.
