As the age-old adage goes, it is always a bad idea to take a knife to a gunfight. Rarely does that showdown end well for the holder of the sharpened blade.

A Nevada woman learned that lesson the hardest way early Thursday evening when she took a long-simmering feud with a neighbor to unexpected new heights and paid for it with her life.

Police in Bullhead City reported that 49-year-old Lucindy Gale Parkinson was upset with her neighbors and made verbal threats when she approached. She allegedly pushed a female resident against a wall and held a knife against her throat.

Investigators noted the victim suffered a “defensive cut” from the knife on her hand as she attempted to defend herself.

It was then that a male resident grabbed a firearm and demanded that Parkinson end the attack and leave. The alleged assailant then turned her attention to the man, and witnesses reported she charged him with the knife.

He opened fire, striking her multiple times. First responders reported that they found Parkinson dead in the front yard when they arrived.

An investigation is ongoing, but no charges have been filed against the man who, by all accounts, defended himself and the female victim from the attack. Though legal action remains possible, the circumstances appear to indicate a clear-cut case of self-defense.

The residents of the house near the Nevada-Arizona border are said to be cooperating with law enforcement.

The loss of life is tragic, but the apparent aggressor left the intended victims with no choice but to respond. A knife may well be as deadly of an instrument as a firearm, and threats made with one can draw a justifiably lethal response.

It was a blessing that the man had access to a weapon, or the outcome could have been markedly different.
