There are far too many horrifying instances of domestic violence in today’s society, and so often, it is the female who is victimized and has very few options for self-defense.
But one young West Virginia woman fought back against her alleged assailant, and she was fortunate enough to gain possession of a weapon and be her own first responder.
According to authorities, a couple was visiting the home of an acquaintance in Charleston when the boyfriend, 32-year-old Chrishawn Perkins, suddenly erupted in violence. He allegedly accused his 19-year-old girlfriend of theft and started attacking her.
Charleston Police officials believe Perkins struck the female in the mouth and arm as well as stomped on her upper body. Then he reportedly brandished a weapon and threatened to kill her.
The acquaintance jumped into the fray to protect the victim, and Perkins fought them as well. At some point, he apparently dropped the weapon, and the female victim took the opportunity to pick it up and fire at her enraged boyfriend.
He was struck at least once.
Despite her efforts to perform CPR on Perkins as emergency personnel rushed to the scene, her alleged attacker died from his wounds. The female was transported to the hospital for treatment of her injuries and was listed in stable condition.
She later told local media that although she would not describe herself as feeling blessed, there was a positive to the deadly encounter. “I just don’t feel scared anymore, but I wish things didn’t go the way they did.”
She recalled being beaten multiple times during their volatile eight-month relationship. No charges were filed against her, and without new and drastically different information, they will likely not be.
The Kanawha County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office is currently reviewing the incident.
