On July 4, Louisiana enacted constitutional carry for all law-abiding citizens. The good people are no longer mandated to go hat-in-hand to the state government for permission to freely exercise their Second Amendment rights.

Now, local law enforcement is forced to step in where irresponsible local leaders attempted to squirm out of being bound by the statute.

New Orleans is at the forefront of the skirmish, and Lafayette joined the fray with an attempt to enact a “gun-free” zone around parts of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. The so-called “safe school zone” would prohibit carry within 1,000 feet of the Downtown Lafayette Science Museum, meaning a vast swath of the city.

The effect would be that much of downtown would be off-limits, especially considering the number of schools in the area.

However, challenges arose regarding using the museum’s presence to thwart constitutional carry, and cooler heads prevailed.

Lafayette Precinct Captain David LeBlanc oversees law enforcement in the city center. On Tuesday, he emailed his officers to tell them not to enforce the controversial local rule due to mounting legal concerns.

Lafayette Parish Mayor-President Monique Boulet reportedly instructed the missive to be sent to officers, directing them not to take action against law-abiding citizens.

This was a wise decision, considering that a museum is not a school and is not subject to typical school-zone restrictions. But Lafayette and New Orleans officials attempted to skirt state law with shaky designations of “schools.”

In New Orleans, leaders tried to reclassify the French Quarter Police Station as a vocational school. This foolhardy action would put much of the popular tourist destination off-limits for constitutional carry.

Local and state officials met to resolve the issue, but after initial reports of an agreement, city officials continued to flout the law with the designation.
