Postal workers travel through sketchy areas of the country every day, and it is not uncommon for them to encounter some of the worst of society. One Atlanta mail carrier ran into an alleged armed robber and was only saved by a kind stranger who also happened to be armed.

Police identified Michael Humes as the Good Samaritan who stepped up and engaged in a shootout with the suspect.

Earlier this month, a female postal worker was delivering mail to a garage positioned behind businesses in the Buckhead area when she encountered an alarming situation.

She was allegedly accosted by a man wearing a yellow hoodie, black shades and a COVID mask. Humes was walking with a friend when he reportedly witnessed the suspect shove a pistol into the woman’s stomach.

Humes recalled, “She just started like crying, she froze up, and she’s like “Oh my God,” and she turns to me and she says ‘help me.’”

The witness came to her aid and confronted the suspect, who immediately became aggressive toward him. Humes attempted to talk the man out of the attack, but the suspect only replied, “I’m trying to eat. Mind your own business or I’m going to kill you.”

The suspect then allegedly fired his weapon and Humes, who was also armed, returned fire. The postal worker was able to scramble to safety as both parties fired shots.

It is a miracle that no one was struck, and it is unclear whether the suspect was taken into custody. Now, Humes was forced to deal with Atlanta Police, and he was unsure of their reaction.

However, investigators reviewed surveillance footage and surprised the hero by congratulating him. “They was like — you did an honorable thing. I approve of everything you did here — he shook my hand.”

Humes can sleep peacefully knowing he stepped up to the challenge and possibly saved the woman’s life. It was a valiant effort that bears retelling.
