Surveillance is everywhere, and it is increasingly difficult for bad guys to do what they do undetected. Four of them were the stars of the show last Thursday night when a Georgia woman spotted them on her security cameras. Horrifyingly, they were already in her Brookhaven home.
The intended victim dutifully dialed 911 to alert authorities, and she also called a nearby friend. It was the friend who arrived first, and they confronted the suspects with a firearm.
A shootout ensued.
The four suspects decided the prudent course of action was to flee the scene, and they did so in a silver Lexus. Police arrived and attempted to stop the getaway car, but it sped away.
A chase ensued, and the suspects made it three miles away before crashing into a utility pole. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported that all four exited the vehicle and ran, but one made a nearly fatal mistake.
The driver, identified as 19-year-old Albert Eugene Burns of Snellville, jumped from the wrecked car with a gun in his hand. An officer then fired and struck Burns, who let go of the weapon but continued to run away.
Investigators determined the suspect then dropped a second weapon as he was being pursued on foot, and when he attempted to pick it back up, he was shot again.
This ended his attempt to flee, and he was taken to the hospital, where he is listed in critical but stable condition.
Two other suspects were apprehended and taken to jail, while a fourth remained on the loose at the time of this report.
The homeowner was absolutely justified in calling a nearby friend for assistance after she called law enforcement. After all, there were four suspects in her home, and at least one was heavily armed.
The friend should be hailed as a hero for having the courage to come to her aid before the police arrived.
