As the old song says, “You’ve got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em.” That was definitely the case for an alleged Texas intruder who threatened a homeowner with a machete only to be confronted with a 9mm pistol.
It was Wednesday when the Liberty Hill resident faced the frightening scenario. Home surveillance video showed a man with a machete and a dog approaching the residence.
Darryl Stevens was talking to a contractor in his backyard when he saw the threatening figure. He recalled the quick actions that followed.
“At that moment, I obviously freaked out. I have two young children here in the house and just went into complete fight or flight mode,” Stevens explained. “I start running through the house. I lock every door as fast as possible, run upstairs. Luckily, I had a firearm there, so I grabbed my 9mm, unlocked it, ran down as fast as possible.”
By that point, the suspect had climbed over the fence and was standing on the deck wielding the machete. The homeowner confronted the intruder, pointed the handgun at him and told him to retreat or he would lose his life.
The intruder apparently weighed the odds and realized he held a losing hand. Stevens said he dropped the weapon and walked away.
Stevens’ wife had called 911 while the alarming confrontation unfolded, and police arrived shortly after. Arrested was 43-year-old Jerry Excamilla of Bertram, and he is being held on a $10,000 bond on charges of criminal trespass and failure to identify.
Stevens noted that his family moved to the quiet subdivision away from the city to feel safe, and such an encounter was wholly unexpected.
Even so, danger may be anywhere, and it is always a good idea to be prepared to confront a violent threat. The presence of a firearm meant the homeowner was able to defuse a frightening situation and protect his loved ones, just as the Second Amendment intended.
