An obviously stunned 46-year-old New York man encountered a frightening situation Wednesday that would terrify anyone, and he is lucky to have walked away unharmed.

A group of violent teenagers allegedly used two vehicles to attempt to run him down, and he was fortunately able to fire several shots at them and avoid being killed.

The startling incident unfolded in Rochester around 3:30 p.m. when an alert resident noticed the occupants of two vehicles, a Hyundai and a Kia, acting suspiciously. The man asked the teens what their business was there, only to see them drive away.

That should have been the end of the encounter, but it was only the beginning.

The teenagers circled back to the resident, and he reported to police that they drove straight at him. However, the intended victim was armed with a legally registered .45-caliber handgun, and he quickly produced his weapon and fired several shots at both cars.

One of the alleged assailants, a 17-year-old, was struck by a bullet.

Police responded to the scene, and the teenager was transported to a nearby hospital with what were described as serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation determined that both vehicles were stolen.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested and charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. He is being held at a youth detention center.

The man who was the alleged target of the young drivers has not been charged, and without new evidence it is doubtful that he will be. Automobiles are absolutely deadly weapons, and he had every right to defend himself from this violent attack.

From all appearances, a good citizen attempted to be on watch for his neighborhood and encountered a group of people with ill intentions. He was armed and ready for the unexpected, which may have saved his life.
