Violent criminals by their nature are aggressive bullies, and it must be a shock to them when a good citizen flips the script and gives them a taste of their own medicine.
This positive outcome became the result on Saturday when a mob of hoodlums on bicycles surrounded a California liquor store clerk and assaulted him. They were very courageous when the numbers were heavily stacked in their favor, and they laughed as they struck their helpless victim.
Well, the Oakland man was not so helpless.
The video first revealed the bicyclists surrounding the lone man standing outside the store, with one of them cowardly striking him on the head from behind. Within moments, there were dozens of predators around the victim.
Several people could be heard shouting, “Get him, get him!”
After showing a remarkable level of restraint, the worker at the Golden Hours Liquor Store produced a firearm and changed the tenor of the incident in a hurry. He revealed to local media that he only drew the weapon when one of the aggressors began tugging on his belt, which made him fear that the firearm would fall to the ground.
The unnamed employee explained, “I mean, he yanked my belt pretty hard, and the firearm started to go down my pants. So, I pulled it out and backed him up, backed them all up.”
That he definitely did.
Video of the wild confrontation revealed loud screams from the attackers who scrambled past each other to flee to safety. The worker leaned against the wall and aimed his firearm at the mob that moments earlier was attacking him, shouting, “Where you at, where you at?”
They were getting as far away from him and his firearm as quickly as they could. Oakland is certainly no stranger to mob violence, but the cure for such despicable attacks was on full display Saturday.
The worker remained outside the store as his former assailants scampered away, and Oakland police responded to the scene. There were no reported injuries, and no arrests were made.
They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting there is one.
