A Maryland man is dead after being shot numerous times by an employee of a Chinese restaurant in Capitol Heights after he allegedly attempted to rob the establishment and attacked the staff.
Police were called to the Oriental Express Thursday due to reports of a violent incident that resulted in a shooting. When they arrived just before 5 p.m., officers found 27-year-old Victor Rios Rubio of Capitol Heights suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigators determined that Rubio entered the restaurant and began robbing the business while assaulting the staff. However, one of the employees flipped the script and defended the workers from the seemingly random attack.
Rubio was pronounced dead by first responders.
Thankfully, it was a slow afternoon, and no customers were present when the frightening scene unfolded.
The weapon was recovered by investigators, who continued to probe the attack. There have been no charges filed as of yet, and it will likely remain that way as by all appearances, the worker was protecting the staff from a potentially deadly encounter.
Local residents told reporters that high crime rates ravage the neighborhood and that many avoid the shopping center due to safety concerns.
One man, Stephon Jones, called the harrowing incident “sad. I was coming over here to grab food, and I found that the cops had taped it off.” Jones added that he has been a regular customer for years and that the restaurant is operated by “really good people.”
Other neighbors spoke highly of the restaurant owners, explaining that they see the businesspeople coming to work before noon and staying through midnight. One referenced a recent shooting at a nearby Popeye’s chicken restaurant and expressed their hope that the spiraling crime rate gets better.
Kudos to the employee who stood up and defended their coworkers, and with any luck, a clear signal was sent to those who would prey on the hardworking people of the area.
