When a person is sound asleep in their bed, the last thing they expect is a home invader to break into their residence and threaten them.
Imagine their shock when the suspect enters their bedroom and turns on the light.
This was the frightening situation a Washington State couple faced early Tuesday morning when they were startled out of their sleep by an unwelcome guest. At about 1:30 a.m., the person allegedly walked into the husband and wife’s bedroom at their Kent residence and flipped the light switch.
The couple should be commended for having a weapon readily available to face the threat. After all, home invaders do not schedule appointments, and they likely expect little to no resistance in the nighttime hours.
The 34-year-old homeowner fired, and the intruder fled through the backyard. The husband was not certain if he struck the suspect, but investigators soon determined that he in fact did.
Police found stolen items outside of the residence that they believe were dropped by the suspect.
A short time later, law enforcement responded to a call of a man being shot. The 39-year-old Kent resident was found with a bullet wound to his torso and transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment.
He matched the description of the suspect accused of breaking into the residence.
KIRO 7 interviewed the homeowner’s brother, who said the experience was like waking up in the middle of a nightmare for the family. The couple’s children were asleep in the house at the time, and no injuries were reported to the family.
The brother observed, “It’s terrifying. No one is expecting to come into your house, especially at night, but like at any time when you are asleep.”
The investigation is ongoing, but the case is a clear-cut example of a homeowner defending life and property from a burglar. The family escaped unharmed, and that is mainly due to the intended victim having a legal firearm and the courage to face the attacker.
