No one ever claimed that criminals are the brightest lot, but they are inherently dangerous and must be treated as a lethal threat. After a successful heist, a group is believed to have targeted the same home the very next night to take even more personal property.

Burglars hit an Ohio home this week and were able to make off with a cache of firearms. Apparently, they were not content with this haul and decided to return to the same Montgomery County residence the following night for another score.

That was a mistake that nearly cost one of them his life. After being victimized 24 hours earlier, the target doubtlessly was on high alert and ready for the unlikely event to happen again.

The resident contacted police on Tuesday to report the theft of guns. That very same night, the homeowner encountered two burglars in his Harrison Township home and then shot at them.

When police arrived, they found both of the suspects there — one sporting a new gunshot wound

The investigation determined that other suspects were involved, and more arrests followed the incident. Police also seized a vehicle believed to have been used in the burglary.

The wounded suspect was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries before being transported to the Montgomery County Jail. Now, multiple people face lengthy sentences behind bars over a foolish attempt to duplicate their earlier haul.

All of this after a successful heist the night before. It’s enough to make someone question the good sense of the criminals, who decided to tempt fate yet again instead of celebrating their take.

It is also a warning that lightning may strike twice, and it is a good idea to be prepared for criminals’ ill-conceived plans. That preparation should usually include a firearm and the will to use it if necessary.
