While there are certainly facts that have not been released and more to the apparent story, the case of an Arkansas man now charged in the shooting death of an alleged kidnapper is raising eyebrows and questions.

The father of a Lonoke County 14-year-old girl is behind bars facing preliminary murder charges over his reported attempt to rescue his abducted daughter. Aaron Spencer told authorities that he was able to locate the alleged perpetrator and shot him in the ensuing confrontation.

It was about 1:12 a.m. when law enforcement responded to the October 8 call about the kidnapping. The family reported they were alerted to the incident by their daughter’s dog barking.

En route, officials received another call that there had been a shooting.

According to a sheriff’s department press release, Michael Fosler was found dead at the scene. “Spencer was transported to the Lonoke County Detention Center and has been charged with Murder in the First Degree, a Class Y felony.”

Lonoke County Sheriff John Staley told reporters that Spencer was jailed on a “preliminary charge of first-degree murder” pending his department’s investigation. He declared that it would be up to the prosecutor’s office to decide whether formal charges would be filed against the father.

Law enforcement confirmed that the missing teen was safe. There is no word if there was a prior relationship between the family and the alleged kidnapper.

The mother posted a plea for financial assistance on a since-deleted GoFundMe page. She said the family needed help to defend the husband from the murder charge he faces “after saving our child from a predator.”

She wrote that over the summer, the young victim was groomed and attacked by a 67-year-old family friend. He was charged and released on a $50,000 bond, according to the mother, and awaits trial in December. It is not apparent whether the suspect in the recent kidnapping is the same person the mother referred to.

She then recounted the harrowing experience her family faced with her daughter’s kidnapping.

“At 1 a.m. on Tuesday morning, we were awoken by our daughter’s dog barking. We checked on her and found that she was not in her bed. Frantically, we called friends, family and 911.”

The mother continued, “My husband went blindly searching for our 14-year-old. By the grace of God, he passed the predator’s vehicle on the road and followed them, trying to get him to pull over with our child. My husband was able to catch up to him and retrieve our child. In the process, he was attacked and did what he needed to protect himself and our daughter.”

Again, as of now, there are more questions than answers. The primary issue is why a preliminary charge of First-Degree Murder was issued in a case that screams that the father did what any good father would do if they believed their young daughter was snatched out of her bed in the middle of the night.

This incident should be closely followed by Second Amendment advocates and those who hold the right to self-defense as sacred. Barring any bombshell revelations, it appears to be a clear-cut case of a justifiable shooting.

If the Second Amendment means anything, it grants the absolute right to defend oneself and family against violent predators. Spencer had to be terrified to find his 14-year-old daughter missing in the middle of the night, and his reaction mirrors that of any concerned father.

According to all current reports, he armed himself and went to rescue his beloved daughter. No further explanation is necessary.
