It is no small historical irony that the birthplace of the American Revolution is now controlled by political leaders who want to eradicate gun rights.

However, Massachusetts’ race to be king of the hill of anti-gun states faces strong pushback from Second Amendment advocates intent on derailing the latest gun control package signed into law.

A package that the National Rifle Association (NRA) dubbed “the most extreme gun laws in the country.”

Jim Wallace is the executive director of the Gun Owners’ Action League (GOAL). Without a hit of exaggeration, he declared the new Massachusetts laws to be “the greatest attack on civil rights in modern U.S. history.”

Toby Leary owns a gun shop and shooting range in Hyannis. He asserted that the state took precise aim “at all our civil rights. If they can do this to the Second Amendment, they can do this with any other right.”

The organized resistance recently crossed the 90,000 registered voters’ signature threshold. Once certified, this would place the question of the state’s controversial measures squarely in front of the voters on the 2026 ballot.

It was bad enough that the contentious statutes were signed by Gov. Maura Healey (D) recently. She further stoked the flames by immediately implementing the measures, heading off a strong attempt by gun rights supporters to suspend the law before it could be imposed.

Healey claimed her signature enhanced the safety of her constituents. “This gun safety law bans ghost guns, strengthens the Extreme Risk Protection Order statute to keep guns out of the hands of people who are a danger to themselves or others, and invests in violence prevention programs.”

The governor declared that it was critical that the law take effect immediately.

Leary countered Healey’s assertion by declaring that the state’s actions were “an effort to suppress a right that is enshrined in our Bill of Rights. That should never be allowed.”

The organized effort to put the decision directly before the voters has raised $100,000. The largest donation reportedly came from Smith & Wesson, a longtime weapons manufacturer in Massachusetts, until hostility from lawmakers prompted it to move its base to the friendlier climate of Tennessee.

Upon closer inspection, the law infringes on the right to keep and bear arms in a way that never should have been passed by state lawmakers and should not withstand legal scrutiny.

For example, there is a broad provision lengthening the state’s list of banned so-called “assault weapons.” These are, in fact, the most popular sporting rifles for the shooting public and are regularly counted on for armed self-defense.

Massachusetts leaders decided that young adults are not fully covered by the Constitution when they outlawed ownership of semi-automatic rifles and shotguns for anyone under 21.

The provisions bolster an already controversial “red flag” system that bypasses due process in the rush to strip arms away from citizens. No one wants weapons in the hands of those who would harm themselves or others.

Still, such a system must include protections for constitutional rights and establish a significant bar for their eradication.

Not content to stop there, the package creates a statewide firearms registration system to be implemented by the Department of Criminal Justice. The dream of every anti-gunner — to have an electronic log of every firearm in the country — is on the cusp of becoming a reality in Massachusetts.

The law establishes that “all firearm transactions within the commonwealth, including, but not limited to, all purchases, sales, rentals, leases, loans or other transfers shall be reported to the electronic firearms registration system.”

There is only one legitimate purpose for such a draconian measure, and that is preparation for confiscation.
