While the standard definition of “arms” as described by the Second Amendment involves firearms, courts have made it clear that a wide variety of self-defense weapons are covered by the “keep and bear” stipulation.

The crossbow, for example.

A pair of alleged Michigan intruders learned this lesson the hard way early Tuesday morning when they apparently broke into a Monroe County home. Emergency personnel logged the call from the scene at 12:38 a.m.

The homeowner was prepared, but not in the usual way that Second Amendment advocates treasure.

Instead, the defender used a crossbow to shoot one of the alleged perpetrators. Just imagine the shock experienced when the bolt struck and the shaft protruded from the suspect.

This immediately ended the alleged home invasion attempt and sent the two unfortunate suspects scrambling to retreat. The person struck was only identified as “a 32-year-old man from Newport,” and the evidence of his involvement was rather straightforward.

He was taken to the hospital for doctors to remove the arrow surgically, and he was arrested as he recovered from the operation.

Detroit media reported that a 41-year-old second suspect was taken into custody near the scene. Investigators believe the confrontation resulted from a previous argument between the parties.

It is not difficult to imagine the homeowner sitting in the dark, ready for such an attack, while wielding his crossbow. It is likewise easy to picture the surprise on the faces of the suspects and even medical personnel when the injured party is transported to the hospital.

It’s not every day when the tale of a good guy with a crossbow comes down the wire, but by all reports, it is yet another case of legal self-defense. All law-abiding Americans enjoy this right, whether by firearm, crossbow or another weapon of choice.
