A senior living complex is hardly the place one would imagine a violent attacker targeting, but there is apparently no refuge from criminals or the mentally disturbed in these times.
This time, the Bella Vista facility in New Haven, Connecticut, was the epicenter of what proved to be a fatal encounter.
It was roughly 5:30 p.m. on Friday when a suspect, later identified as 56-year-old John Reynolds, allegedly carried a machete as he pounded on doors in the complex and otherwise behaved erratically. He reportedly had a history of mental instability, and investigators believe he was possibly under the influence.
The mayhem that ensued led to a physical confrontation with a senior citizen who lives at Bella Vista, and the man was armed.
When police arrived, they found Reynolds fatally wounded, though details of the encounter have not been disclosed. Investigators initially concluded that the elderly man acted in self-defense, and no charges were immediately filed.
One resident, Leigh Busby, said his wife was disturbed by the incident. “I told my wife, and she was at Bible study, and she said, “Oh my God, we have to get out of here. She was a little upset by it obviously.”
Other neighbors reported that the senior living complex employs security, but it did not deter Friday’s attack.
Busby added, “We need better security. We can’t just have everybody coming in and out of here like that.”
Children and the elderly should be shielded from random violence, but it is an unfortunate fact in modern society that no one is immune from the effects of crime. It turned out to be a blessing that a senior citizen with a gun was able to protect his neighbors and end the threat, and he should be lauded as a hero.
