If anti-gunners get their way and strip Second Amendment rights from Americans, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that only the bad guys will have firearms. In this case, the good people will be left with no choice but to be victims and meekly submit to those who would take their property and even do them harm.

But until that day, it is gratifying to know that law-abiding citizens continue to enjoy the freedom to defend themselves from violent criminals. And they are not subject to the whims of those who care nothing for the law.

Another such case exploded in Houston on Thursday morning during the break of day. Police were called to a parking lot near an apartment complex for reports of shots fired at around 6:45 a.m., and responding officers found a wounded man asking for help.

The investigation determined that he was far from an innocent victim.

Officers believe the gunshot victim targeted a 58-year-old man for armed robbery, prompting an exchange of gunfire between the two. The would-be victim was not injured, and he was able to hit the suspect with at least one gunshot.

The uninjured party remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Meanwhile, the unidentified male suspect was transported to an area hospital, where he died from his wounds.

Several HPD vehicles surrounded the area, and local media reported spotting a pool of blood from a news helicopter.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office is investigating to determine if any charges will be filed against the individual who apparently acted in self-defense. Barring any surprising new evidence, it is difficult to imagine the Texas man will face legal consequences for his actions Thursday morning.

If the facts of the case hold, the loss of life is tragic but also foolish. It is unwise to believe that upstanding citizens will not defend themselves in the face of unprovoked violence.
