New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s (D) contentious “emergency” executive order banning weapons from a wide array of public spaces died a natural death this week when she allowed it to expire.
This came in the face of a deluge of litigation from Second Amendment advocates against the state. Even Grisham’s own party colleagues voiced their displeasure in having to answer to the voters for such an infringement on constitutional rights.
The governor announced, “I have decided to allow the public health order to expire, but our fight to protect New Mexico communities from the dangers imposed by guns and illegal drugs will continue.”
What she failed to disclose was that her Albuquerque administration does not have meaningful answers to the crime problem rampant in the state’s largest cities. Instead, they are fixated on doing “something,” even when that is only targeting law-abiding gun owners.
In September 2023, Grisham stepped into a steaming mess of trouble by issuing a silly emergency public health order. The official response to a spate of violent criminal activity was to foolishly target the good people exercising their constitutional right to self-defense.
Her solution? Strip the ability to carry weapons in virtually every public space in the Albuquerque region. Critics charged she and other state leaders were merely throwing a tantrum over the Supreme Court’s Bruen decision, which significantly restored gun rights to the people.
Lawsuits poured in from nearly every corner of the nation. Second Amendment advocates lined up for their turn to express outrage over such a blatant violation of the Constitution.
Most of the illegal provisions were quickly struck down in court, though a few were permitted to remain. Only the prohibition covering public parks and playgrounds withstood the onslaught of legal action, and Grisham wisely backed away.
Even members of her own party criticized the naked power grab by state officials. Now, the last remaining vestiges of her mistake are gone.
