Never mind that toy guns are already heavily regulated in New York ahead of this year’s Halloween festivities. Attorney General Letitia James (D) deemed it necessary this week to warn state retailers that government officials are closely watching their wares.

Yes, there have been tragic instances in which police officers mistook a toy weapon for a real one. That is why New York law prohibits stores from selling dark-colored toys that look like the genuine article.

Instead, they are required to be manufactured with bright colors or be transparent. And, of course, they must have the now-familiar bright orange tip to alert law enforcement and others that they are not authentic.

Gone are the days when youngsters could engage in a rousing round of “cops and robbers” or emulate the Old West. If this saves a youngster’s life who should have had better parents, then the outcome is worthy.

But James is merely grandstanding as yet another New York state official who is decidedly anti-Second Amendment and crusades against the right to keep and bear arms. After all, the Empire State has passed numerous onerous laws in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s monumental 2022 Bruen decision.

A ruling that smacked down these very same officials for infringing on the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens.

James ominously warned that “retailers selling realistic-looking toy guns as part of a costume are not making Halloween fun, they are violating the law.”

And what does James genuinely hope to accomplish by reminding retailers of what they already know — besides getting some TV time? After all, it takes nothing more than black or metallic spray paint and a touch of electrical tape to make any transparent toy gun look authentic.

No, the intent is merely posturing and continuing a crusade to alter the public perception of freedoms granted by the Second Amendment.
