It has been said but bears repeating — carjacking is a deadly serious crime that leads to increasingly dangerous encounters when armed citizens refuse to be a victims.
This time, the frightening scenario unfolded in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood in South Chicago. It was early Thursday morning when what was described as a gang of teens attempted to steal a driver’s Toyota Camry.
While they eventually made off with the vehicle, one of their alleged accomplices did not get to participate in the joyride.
It was about 5:30 a.m. when four males allegedly accosted the driver. They demanded that he hand over his sedan, and local media reports noted that they sprayed him with what was described as a “chemical agent.”
The 47-year-old driver turned out to be a valid FOID and CCL holder, and he had other ideas. He was able to fire at least two shots, striking a 16-year-old suspect in the left knee and left arm.
While the group was somehow able to take off with the Toyota, the 16-year-old remained behind for authorities to scoop up. He was transported to Christ Hospital in Chicago, where he was listed in fair condition.
The intended victim was treated at the scene for contact with the unknown chemical.
Chicago Police are investigating the incident, but it is highly unlikely that the intended victim will face charges.
Carjackings and auto thefts are thankfully down in Chicago thus far in 2024, though they remain higher than they were just a couple of years ago. Bearing Arms reported that these incidents result in suspects being charged only 3.34% of the time — hardly the deterrent that a much higher closure rate would bring.
Therefore, it is mainly up to law-abiding citizens to defend themselves from this scourge. As Thursday’s incident demonstrated, one of the best ways is to use a legal firearm and have the courage to defend oneself.
